A Study in Black & White by Mary Boesel

I have to admit, so often when I finish designing a round of images - as soon as I am done - I am off thinking about the next images to come. With us just stepping into summer, my thoughts are already focused on fall autumn leaves, pretty pumpkins with swirls and vines, gravestones, black cats and all things Halloween. So when I saw Mary's study of black and white that uses a few of our summer and spring florals it brought me back to the present and I enjoyed looking at each card she created.

I think you will enjoy Mary's inspiring work and here is what she has to say about her study;

With all the colors available to us we often forget the elegant beauty that simple black and white can be. I often think of a tuxedo and how everyone looks good in one. Here are some simple examples showcasing black and white.

Here are her Instructions - Flourished Guitar card
Supplies:
Hearts Flourish • Flourished Guitar • White Cardstock 2 ½” x 3 ½” • Black Cardstock 3 ¾” x 5”
White Cardstock 5 ½” x 8 ½” • Black and White paper Scraps • Colorbox White Pigment Ink
Black Versafine Ink • Crystals • Flower punches or diecuts

• Stamp black cardstock with white pigment ink and heart flourish stamp. Pigment ink takes time to dry - I recommend heat setting.
• Stamp small piece of white cardstock with the guitar using black Versafine ink
• Punch or diecut two white and two black flowers. The white flower should be the largest and the second smallest. Black should be the second largest and the smallest.
• Stamp the large flower with black Versafine ink with the heart flourish.
• Mount the guitar on the black panel in lower left corner and then mount this onto the folded white cardstock.
• Layer the flowers alternating color and place in the upper right corner of the image
• Apply crystals in center of flower and in various spots on the guitar flourish

Flower Silhouette
Flower Silhouette Stamp • Versamark Ink • Black Versafine Ink • White Embossing Powder
Puff Static Bag • Crystals • Small Flower Punch • Mini Sun Punch • 3” x 5 ¼” White Cardstock
4” x 5 ¼” White Cardstock • 2 ¼” x 3 ¾” Black Cardstock • 5 ½” x 8 ½” Black Cardstock

• Rub the small piece of black cardstock with the puff static bag.(this prevent embossing powder from sticking where it does not belong) Stamp the flower with versamark ink and then emboss with white embossing powder.
• On the 4” x 5 ¼” white cardstock stamp the flower silhouette using the top of the stamp and black versafine ink.
• Mount the black cardstock with image onto the 3” x 5 ¼” white cardstock. Center the image onto the white cardstock.
• Mount the above onto the stamped white cardstock, placing it in the center.
• Fold black cardstock in half and mount the above onto it.
• Punch six black flowers and six white suns. Glue suns into the center of the flowers and place three above the image and three below.
• Glue crystals into the centers

Floral Garden
Floral Garden Stamp • Heart Flourish • R29 Copic Marker • Black Brilliance Ink • Grey Marvy Ink • White Shrink Plastic • Black Crosgrain Ribbon • Red crystals • Large flower punches or die cuts • 2 ¼” x 4 ½” White Cardstock • 2 ¾” x 5” Black Cardstock • 4 ¼” x 5 ½” White Cardstock
9” x 5 ¾” Black Cardstock

• Stamp floral garden with black brilliance ink onto the 2 ¼” x 4 ½” white cardstock
• Heat set and color a few of the open flowers with the R29 Copic marker
• Mount the stamped image onto the black 2 ¾” x 5” black cardstock
• On the large white cardstock stamp the upper left and lower right corners with the grey ink and heart flourish stamp.
• Mount the layer image onto the upper half of the stamped large piece of white cardstock
• Punch or die cut four large flowers out of shrink plastic. Stamp all over the flowers with black brilliance ink and the heart flourish. Shrink flowers as stated on package instructions.
• Tie a bow with black ribbon. Lay a ribbon across bottom of card and secure. Glue shrink flower, bow, and then three more flowers.
• Fold large piece of black in half and mount card onto it.
• Glue red crystals into the center of shrink flowers
